On February 10, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI confirmed Mar Cleemis as the Father and Head of the Malankara Catholic Church. Mar Cleemis assumed the name Baselios Cleemis and was elected as Major Archbishop-Catholicos and Major Archbishop of Trivandrum on March 5, 2007, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Trivandrum. This marked a new chapter in the rich tradition of the church.
Pope Benedict XVI created him Cardinal on October 24, 2012. He was installed as Cardinal on November 24, 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI. This honour recognised his dedication and service to the church.
